Maintaining good mental health in the workplace should be a priority for everybody, employer and employee alike. Our mental health affects everything in our lives from how we feel and how we act to how we maintain connections and relationships, so it’s important to take steps to ensure our mental health remains positive. The team at GW & Co recognise the importance of good mental health in the workplace and wanted to share with you some healthy steps to help you maintain good mental health.
The following are a few suggestions from the GW & Co team on how everybody can maintain good mental health in the workplace throughout 2023.
1. Take a break
It sounds obvious but breaks can be a great way to reset and recharge, especially when you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed at work. Scheduling regular breaks throughout the day will help you stay focused and productive. This can be as simple as taking a few minutes to step away from your desk and take a walk or grab a cup of coffee.
2. Communicate with your manager
Keeping an open dialogue with your manager can help ensure that you’re on the same page with expectations and can help you stay on track with your goals. It’s also a good opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have and to get feedback and support.
3. Set boundaries
Establishing boundaries between work and personal life can be difficult, but it’s important for your mental health. Make sure to respect your work hours and avoid checking emails or taking calls outside of them. Moreover, ensure you remember to relax and enjoy your personal life, whether that be spending time with friends/family or enjoying your favourite hobby without your work interfering.
4. Get organised
Making sure that you know what tasks need to be done and when can help reduce stress and boost productivity. Create lists and use a calendar to help you stay on top of your work so your load does not become overwhelming.
5. Practice Self-Care
Making time for yourself is important for maintaining good mental health. This can be as simple as taking a few minutes out of your day to practice some breathing exercises or meditate. It can also be something more substantial like taking a weekend off to relax and recharge.
6. Connect with colleagues
Building relationships with your colleagues can help create a sense of community and can make the workday more enjoyable. Try to make time to talk with your co-workers, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
7. Seek help if needed.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or struggling with your mental health, it’s important to reach out and seek professional help. Don’t be afraid to talk to your manager or HR representative about any concerns you may have
These are just a few suggestions for how to maintain good mental health in the workplace. Ultimately, it comes down to taking the time to prioritise your mental health and make sure that you’re doing what’s best for you. Not only will this help you stay productive and fulfilled in your work, but it can also have a positive impact on your overall well being.
