The menopause, colloquially known as “the change,” can be a tough time for any woman, but it can be especially tough when you’re trying to juggle work and home life. It is a topic which should not be shied away from and for women in the workplace ,with symptoms that can be often difficult to manage, the challenges can be even greater.
Here are some tips for coping with the menopause in the workplace:
Talk to Your Employer.
If you’re finding the menopause symptomatic, it’s important to have an open and honest conversation with your employer or the HR department. They may be able to offer some flexible working arrangements to help you through this time and allow you time off for any medical appointments you may have.
Find a Support Network.
This could be just friends, family, or colleagues or professional support groups. There are likely to be other women in your workplace going through the menopause. Find someone you can confide in and who will understand what you’re going through or contact an organised support group in your area. This may help you to feel not so alone while going through menopause and offer constructive and healthy coping methods which can help make your day easier.
Take Care of Yourself.
The menopause can be a draining time, both physically and mentally. Make sure you’re taking care of yourself by eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep. This may sound obvious, but many women forget to take time out for “self-care”. Even taking 30 mins to an hour out of your day for some “me time” to take part in an activity you like to do, or relaxing in a hot bath can destress you and take your mind off any symptoms you may be experiencing.
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help.
If you’re struggling to cope, don’t be afraid to ask for help from your family and friends with the day-to-day duties of your life or emotional support. Additionally, it is important if you feel you cannot cope with your symptoms or want to find out more about the menopause and the options you have to take the time to talk to your GP. Don’t put off booking that appointment like so many do. They are there to help you through this time and can offer treatments to help relieve your symptoms.
Keep a Positive Attitude.
Sounds simple, right? However, this can be easily forgotten when you are feeling overwhelmed or poorly. The menopause can be a tough time, but it’s important to try and stay positive and have a positive mental attitude. Remember that this is a natural process that every woman must go through, and you are not alone. Focus on the good things in your life and the things that make you happy no matter how big or small they may be.
