Diversity and Inclusion are not just buzzwords but are two of the most important values in the modern workplace. The team here at GW and Co feel it is important to address these head on. They are something we hold true to our core values as a business. We feel that businesses that fully embrace diversity and inclusion principles and understand their importance are able to create a workplace environment where employees feel valued, respected and are able to contribute their ideas and perspectives in meaningful ways.
But what is diversity and inclusion? What do they mean?
By valuing the different perspectives and backgrounds of employees, companies are able to create a workplace where ideas and creative solutions are shared. Businesses that embrace diversity are better able to attract and retain top talent, as they are able to demonstrate a commitment to creating an environment that values different perspectives.
It is important to note that businesses in the UK do have legal obligations to meet when it comes to diversity and inclusion. That is to say, it is a legal requirement for UK companies to ensure they are treating all their staff fairly and equally. Moreover, The Equality Act 2010 requires businesses of all to adopt an Equality and Diversity Policy, which should include a commitment to promote equality and diversity among every aspect of the organisation – from recruitment and training to promotions and retirement.
The principles of diversity and inclusion in the workplace go far beyond the bare minimum of legal requirements. We believe a comfortable, safe, and inclusive workplace is essential for all employees of all backgrounds and walks of life. Not only does this allow for the best kind of working environment for the employee from a business perspective, but it allows for a respectful environment on a human level. Every human deserves and must be treated with dignity and respect. It is important for your employees to feel valued and that they are valued, after all they are working for the benefit of your business.
Moreover, a lack of diversity and inclusion in the workplace can have more profound effects on an individual than merely feeling undervalued. It can have a significant impact on an individual’s mental health (mental health is something GW and Co have discussed in the past and will continue to discuss as we believe it is important to look after your mental health).
Without a diverse and inclusive workplace, individuals/employees are more likely to feel isolated and “othered”, which can lead to feelings of low self-worth, depression, and anxiety. Furthermore, when employees don’t feel included, they may be more likely to experience harassment or discrimination, which can lead to further mental health issues. These are terrible issues to have in a workplace and shows just how important implementing and believing in diversity and inclusion principles are.
GW and Co urge all businesses to take a look at their principles and ensure they are doing right by their employees. Moreover, employees that feel that their company is not adhering to these principles, it is your right to feel safe, accepted and included in the workplace. Take measures to ensure that you are working in a diverse and inclusive atmosphere and protect your mental health. After all, you only have one body and one mind and it is important to look after them and know and understand your worth and value as an individual.
